if you have a modern house built to new air tight efficiency regulations, indoor air quality equipment and components are more of a necessity than an option.

Cheaper Is Not Better
The cheapest equipment at purchase price will not save you money overall. Air conditioners, furnaces and heat pumps all have efficiency ratings called SEER, AFUE, EER and HSPF which dictate the amount you will spend on monthly energy bills. All HVAC components must match each other. Do not go with a system that just meets the government minimum. As of 2006, a new air conditioner's minimum rating must be SEER 13. Yet you can purchase air conditioners today with ratings up to 26 SEER. Such will make a huge difference on the operating cost of the unit and the overall environmental aspects as well.
Ask Around
How long has a contractor been in business? Can they supply you with references similar to your HVAC needs? Ask others in your area who they used and whether they would recommend them. Again, you want someone experienced with a good reputation - not someone that is learning the ropes on your installation and at your expense.
